EMC Entertainment - The Carp Fair may be agriculture's chance to shine, but there is also always plenty of good entertainment and this year is no exception.

The Carp Farmers Market celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday, July 10 with a large cake cut by Kanata North councillor Marianne Wilkinson, left, Stittsville councillor Shad Qadri and David McCreery, president of the Carp Farmers market.
The line-up for this year's fair, which runs from Sept. 23-26, has been released and according to fair board manager Joyce Trafford, "there is certainly something for everyone."
This year's 147th fair kicks off Thursday, Sept. 23 with the Tubman's Homecoming celebration in the W. Erskine Johnston Arena beginning at 7 p.m. Entertaining that night will be the Ottawa Valley's sweetheart, Gail Gavan. She will be joined by renowned fiddler Louis Schreyer and the Louis Schreyer dancers at 8 p.m.
Carrying on the tradition from last year when Blue Rodeo headlined the Friday night show, Canadian rock/blues singer Colin James will be taking the stage at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena that night. Opening for James will be Prescott, the brother and sister duo of Kaylen and Kelly Prescott. They are third-generation musicians who hail from Mississippi Mills (Clayton) whose parents are Tracey Prescott of the Family Brown and Randall Prescott. Tickets for this show are $55 and go on sale July 19.
Trafford said the hope is this show sells out as fast as Blue Rodeo did a year ago.
Saturday afternoon (Sept. 25), Jason Roos will be on stage opening for Tommy Cash. Cash, the brother of the late Johnny Cash, will be performing a tribute show to his brother. Admission to this event is included with one's regular fair admission.
That evening, the arena stage will feature Printers Alley Band opening for Road Hammers - a Tragically Hip tribute band. Tickets for this show are $30 each and go on sale July 19.
The final fair day of Sunday, Sept. 26, will see the band Sticks 'n Stones open for veteran Canadian rockers Chilliwack. The show, at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena, begins at 1 p.m. with Chilliwack taking the stage at 3:30 p.m. Show admission is included with one's regular fair admission.
MIDWAY RETURNS
Along with the agriculture and homecraft exhibits and shows, the midway will be back this year but the lumberjack show will not. New this year will be The Flying Fools High Dive Show. These performers, jumping from up to 25 metres in the air, perform acrobatic dives in the air before landing in a small pool.
Trafford said planning for this year's fair is well in hand and there is also plenty to do at the fairgrounds prior to its staging.
"We are holding our Drive-In Bingos every Wednesday in July," she told the EMC.
A barbecue takes place at the fairgrounds at 6:30 p.m. with bingo beginning at 8 p.m.
As well, drive-in movies will be held under the stars Aug. 11 and 25.
"People are currently voting on what movies we should have," Trafford said.
NEW WEBSITE
In other fair news, a new Carp Fair website is being launched this week.
"All our fair information will be up to date on that new site," she noted, adding it was time for an upgrade.
While keeping the fairgrounds in tip top shape is a year-long process, Trafford said some renovations are being done now to the main office and hall.
"We are insulating the exterior building," she said, adding it should keep the building warmer in winter.
As well, cultured stone will be put on a portion of the building from the ground up to the point where the red board siding is installed, replacing the existing brick wall that has been seen for years from Carp Road. As well, new front doors will be installed at the fair office.
